It was reported in July 1943 that a field off Rouse's Lane was being considered as a site for a new cemetery, and in May 1945 this field was purchased from Mr R Wyer for £620. This site is diagonally across the Howdale and along Rouses Lane, to the east of the King’s Walk and Churchside Cemeteries.
The first interment in Rouses Lane Cemetery took place in February 1947, and is currently the burial ground for the parishes of Downham Market and Downham West.
The area to the left as you enter the Cemetery is for Non-Conformists and the remaining area is primarily for Anglican interments.
This larger portion of the Cemetery also contains areas for the interment of cremated remains of all denominations. There are different areas reserved for non-memorial cremated remains, for flat memorial stones and standing memorial stones.
Within the Non-Conformist area can be found the grave of Father Oswald Baker, a former Roman Catholic Priest of the Town. It will be noticed that, whilst in all other cases the headstone is at the western end of the grave Father Baker was interred with his headstone to the east. This is a tradition for members of the clergy “to keep a watch over their flock”.
To the south of the Cemetery is an area which has been leased to Downham Market Town Council for allotments for the Allotment Association but, as the need for additional grave spaces has arrived, the allotment area has been taken back and prepared for interments.
